Featuring examples from Allison & James Sailing
I have admired Allison and James' sailing adventures for about 2 years now, and from a social media perspective, they have kept it simple and utilize consistency across their YouTube, Patreon, and Facebook pages to raise awareness for their endeavors. I admire that Allison and James have reached 37.1K subscribers on YouTube and receive $295.20 per creation on Patreon. Allison and James' Facebook page has a consistent story being told in alignment to the other platforms, however the platform is used differently and has less followers.
Allison and James have been sailing through the Inside Passage up through Alaska and British Columbia. They have navigated along sea life such as Orcas, Sealions, and otters. They're social media has been used to share updates throughout their voyage and has painted the journey of beauty and simplicity balanced with storm and challenge. Their Facebook posts are consistently featuring still photos from their journey, or sharing links to view videos on the external platforms - Youtube and Patreon. With their Subscriber amount on Youtube and Patreon earnings, it makes sense to direct traffic to those sites with the intent to generate revenue to crowdfund their trip.
In Figure 1, you see that the Patreon link has been shared to the Facebook page

While some content creators may post their video straight to the Facebook platform, I see value in keeping their online platforms manageable by redirecting traffic to the monetized platforms. With these external links sprinkled in, the Meta algorithms may not prefer the user's departure to an external website, however the link fuels the story of travel and the sharing of this link to Facebook acts as a reminder for their followers to go check out their new video.
These links are amongst other photos from their adventure so the story stays consistent with their activity on Facebook as well as the other sites. They post photos every 1-4 days and keep the consistent theme of Sailing through the Alaskan and British Columbian waters, showing life on the boat, and the life they see moving around them.
On Allison and James' YouTube page, their story is very clear, and you can see all content for free. Allison and James keep the same story going but with larger scale. In each of their YouTube videos, posted every other week, you get to cruise along with them as they navigate icebergs and become humbled by receding glaciers. Their story is clear to follow and with frequent uploads and back to back destinations, it is easy to stay connected to the story. Allison and James include tribute to their Patreon members who directly donate to their voyage by showcasing their names on the credits at the end of their videos (Fig.2). While watching their vlogs and experiences on YouTube, the recognition they give to their Patrons doesn't go unnoticed, and I love that they have made it a priority to not only connect with their contributors, but also connect their YouTube viewers back to the Patreon account. While I have yet to contribute to Allison and James' Patreon, I see the credits at the end of their YouTube videos crediting their Patrons and it always makes me curious about being a Patron myself. Whether that desire arises from ego, goodness, or jealousy, I think Allison and James were very strategic in implementing this "Thanks" at the end of their videos.

Even with a paywall, Allison and James have a clear story happening from video to video. Even by just seeing the thumbnails and reading the video titles, it is clear to see they are on a voyage that is carrying them through create oceanic experiences. Allison and James share titles of their adventures in different ways on their Patreon opposed to YouTube.

YouTube:

Each platform uses different verbiage to communicate the same information for the same video. Based on platform usage, it makes sense to have different descriptions that will bring in your audience. Patrons, paying for the series would likely benefit from knowing this is a new episode whereas on Youtube this may just be filler wording.
Overall, Allison and James Sailing has great consistency in their storytelling and use their media platforms to correlate and mingle with each other in an effective fashion for their funding and experience-sharing endeavors.

Hi Izzy! Thanks for sharing about Allison and James journey. I think one of the greatest parts of all their different platforms they use, are that each viewer gets to choose how invested they want to to be in their lives. They can choose to just watch the free content, and know that if they want more behind the scenes they can follow along on Patreon. It’s nice how they offer flexibility yet have lots of viewers across all platforms!
